Hi! I’m Lisa, a freelance cartographer and GIS professional based in New York City.
I grew up in Seattle and attended Carleton College in Minnesota. After six years as a teacher in Minnesota and then NYC, I worked as the Chief of Staff and Household Manager for a family in Manhattan. In that role I learned how to solve just about any kind of problem and how to talk to everyone from plumbers to congresspeople. I’ve brought that can-do attitude and Jill-of-all-trades skillset along with me into the world of cartography.
But how did I get into cartography? I have always loved maps - poring over the fantasy maps in the front of novels, immediately searching for any location mentioned in a news article, and navigating on family road trips from a young age with a road atlas in my lap. After teaching and being a household manager, I was ready for a new challenge and the idea of map making kept rising to the top.
I realized that my particular blend of skills in mathematical and logical reasoning, design, and communication fit exceptionally well with the field of GIS and cartography. I completed the Certificate program in GIS at Hunter College in order to render this career change a reality. I find maps and their creation endlessly fascinating and I can’t wait to make something spectacular for you.
When I’m not making maps, I can be found cooking, knitting/crocheting, or chasing my kids around Central Park with an everything bagel in one hand and coffee in the other.
